First there was one
Karen Griggs is an artist who moved to Canada in 2006 and began to design custom jewelry for local wineries. Daydreaming about being able to develop a business that would allow her to follow her passions, Karen came up with the unique idea of developing a bead trail to run alongside the Summerland winery trail.
Now, five-years on, there are nine communities on the Okanagan Bead Trail
The recently launched (and still in development) Kelowna/Lake Country and Peachland trails, and Westside
, Okanagan Falls
, and Osoyoos
. There are 140 businesses, artists and tourist attractions on the BT map, including 57 wineries… of course!
Karen is known valley-wide as the’ bead lady’ and loves to meet with new businesses and visit the friends that are already on the trail as she drives from community to community to deliver beads and bracelets. She often takes Sid the BT mascot on her journeys and he even has his own hashtag #beadtrailsid
Congratulations to Karen, and also to Pat, the Bead Trail General Manager who has helped steer the business onwards and upwards. For these ladies one of the most rewarding aspect of Bead Trails is that as the business grows, the arts and other sectors grow stronger too!
