Osoyoos for Kids

An increasing number of families are embarking on the Bead Trail as children of all ages take delight in choosing bead charms to commemorate their vacation or day trip. By following the trail, families often find places and communities that they might not normally visit.  These are some of  the Osoyoos highlights that might appeal to kids.

Osoyoos Desert Centre, #1 on the Osoyoos Bead Trail Map.

Listen to the haunting cry of an eagle as it circles the hills, breathe-in the sagebrush and walk the boardwalk through the diversity of this unique desert environment.  You may not see many of the deserts’ shy inhabitants but you can spot their tracks and hidey-holes.  Play with the hands-on exhibits, browse the Gift Shop or enjoy the view and the humming-birds as you eat a snack in the outdoor picnic area.  While having fun, children will learn all about desert ecology, habitat restoration and the conservation of endangered ecosystems! Wheelchair & stroller accessible.

Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad #2 on the Osoyoos Bead Trail Map.

The 45 trains and 4,000 square feet of miniature European landscapes alone would make this a must-see destination!  But add 1800 buildings and over 18,000 hand-painted characters, and you will see why a family can spend hours taking a birds-eye view journey through this make-believe world. Witness thousands of detailed vignettes of every-day life - ranging from the hum-drum to high drama to comedic accidents and incidents.  The Gift Shop carries wooden and model trains & tracks, and a wide variety of fun items for kids. Wheelchair & stroller accessible.

Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre #12 on the Osoyoos Bead Trail Map.

The land, the legends, the people.  Take a peek inside a traditional pit house and sweat lodge; sit in a multi-sensory theatre to hear legends of the trickster Coyote (Sen’klip) ; walk in the desert landscape and discover history and intriguing sculptures. Purchase unique aboriginal crafts and gifts. A typical day at Nk’mip might include a guided trail walk, crafts and Chaptikw stories, a live-snake presentation and a traditional singing and drumming performance. Wheelchair & stroller accessible.
