The BeadTrails Experience was created in Summerland in 2010 by Karen Griggs. The innovative idea, which promotes both business and tourism, was recognized when she received the Tourism and Hospitality Excellence Award 2010 and the Retail Excellence Award 2013 from the Summerland Chamber of Economic Development and Tourism. The BeadTrails unites the region's wineries, boutiques, restaurants, artist studios and cultural points of interest in a unique tour-like approach.
The BeadTrails Experience store is located in downtown Summerland, 13207 Victoria Road North. Call by to pick up the signature quail bead and stay to browse the artisan gifts, cards and artwork. And why not take a selfie with Sid the BeadTrails' mascot or sign up for a creative workshop?
Karen, aka “the Bead Lady,” is passionate about art, design, people and community. An artist in her own right, Karen has a diploma in Art & Design and completed a Certificate in Person Centred Art Therapy in the UK. She uses arts and crafts workshops to help empower adults with learning disabilities and has held similar sessions for local mental health services to aid in rehabilitation.
Originally from England, Karen moved to Canada and settled in Summerland in 2008. She established her studio as the artist in residence at the Summerland Art Gallery and worked with many art forms, including painting and design work. But her passion remained beading and she continues to innovate using this meticulous art form today.
Karen acknowledges and thanks Community Futures / Economic Gardening scheme and the Summerland Arts Council for their ongoing support.
